Class Descriptions
Weaving: Students will learn the basics of setting up a loom and weaving patterns, as well as the vocabulary of weaving. Appropriate for beginning and intermediate students.
The Basics of Silver: (Toni Touchberry) Learn the basic metalsmithing/jewelry skills. We will cover use of the jewelry saw, filing, sawing, roller mill textures and simple soldering. This class is for beginner. Be ready to experiment, try different techniques, and, based on time, finish 2-3 projects. No experience necessary.
Tricks and Techniques in Silversmithing: (Toni Touchberry) Continue on in your exploration of the jewelry medium. Tricks will be interspersed throughout! Some soldering experience necessary.
Lapidary: (Wiley Gainus) Students will learn how to cut and polish semi-precious stones as well as learning about the origin of the stones, the vocabulary of lapidary, and the basics of design.
Stained Glass: (Cheryl Stippich) Beginning students will learn cutting techniques, how to apply copper foil and basic soldering. They will complete an 8” hanging suncatcher. Returning students can improve their basic skills while working on the same project or one similar in size and complexity.
Tiffany-style Lamp Shades – (Rick Viehman) Students comfortable with cutting glass, grinding and soldering will learn about the proper types of glass to use, use of different types of lamp forms, and special techniques of soldering so that the lampshade will look like a true Tiffany reproduction. Creating a quality reproduction like this will take many hours, so be prepared.
Beginning Quilting: (Diana Jackson) The basics of quilting – choosing and preparing fabric, use of the rotary cutter, the ¼” seam, piecing the top, and putting together the quilted piece – will all be covered while students make a log cabin table runner.
Introduction to Textiles Arts: (Christine Mariotti) Learn the basics of color, resists, fabric dyeing and painting.
Faux Finishes for Walls and Furniture: (Audria Pace) She will cover basic faux techniques for walls, furniture and cabinetry and will also help you plan your own project, introduce you to the materials and tools of the trade and share insider info that can help make or break your project and sanity.
Woodturning: (Jim Mellberg) Starting with rough logs or precut blanks, students will learn how to use a small lathe and the necessary tools to make a variety of turned projects. Suitable for both the beginning and continuing student.
Basic Woodworking for Beginners : (Garland Rice) Students will be instructed in safe use of basic woodworking hand and power tools. Projects will include a mitered jewelry box with raised panel top and splined corners and a three legged stool with turned legs.
Woodcarving Studio: Members work on their own projects in the company of other wood carvers.
Beginning & Intermediate Wheel: (Jim Cullen/Meghan Bernard) This course is designed for the beginner as well as the intermediate who wants to learn new techniques or brush up on their throwing skills. The class will focus on throwing on the potter’s wheel. Basic shapes will be studied, pieces will be bisque fired and glazed. Glazed pieces will be fired and then critiqued by the class.
Clay for Adult & Child: (Nancy Heim) Where an adult and child will have the opportunity to enjoy working together with clay while exploring pottery. Students will experience pinch pot construction, coil built, slab construction and wheel work, as well as glazing and decorating techniques.
Coffee & Clay: (Nancy Heim) An informal class where students work on projects of their own choice. All levels of experience are invited. Instruction and/or guidance will be available if needed. Projects can be hand built, wheel work or sculptured.
Fused Glass: (Jerry Pospisil) Work with various shapes and colors of glass, fusing them together to make patterns and designs. Then try slumping, a shaping technique used to give the fused glass piece shape and dimension. Projects may include soap dishes, candy dishes, small plates or wind chimes.
Basketry: Renowned heritage basket maker, Ruby Lowery, will hold a 6 hour workshop during which student will make popular 12” market basket.
Carving Ducks – (Joe Brausch) Students will study, power carve and texture a Green Wing Teal. Each student will receive a cut-out blank and proper glass eyes. This class is for the intermediate to advanced carver with their own tools. Please call for a complete list of tools needed.
Carved Decorative Tiles and More – (Jim Cullen) Create beautiful carved tiles to use as a backsplash, table top or just display and enjoy. Students create greenware tiles, carve designs or pictures into them and then add glaze to complete the process.
Playful Garden Pottery – (Merci Weitzen) Make garden markets, ornaments or figures. Carve, incise, and impress the clay with stamps or tools. Learn new glazing techniques like washes, oxides, wax resist and multi-color glaze painting. Handbuilding for beginners or intermediate.
