Class Descriptions
Weaving: Students will learn the basics of setting up a loom and weaving patterns, as well as the vocabulary of weaving. Appropriate for beginning and intermediate students.
The Basics of Silver: (Ruthie Cohen) Learn the basic metalsmithing/jewelry skills. We will cover use of the jewelry saw, filing, sawing, roller mill textures and simple soldering. This class is for beginner. Be ready to experiment, try different techniques, and, based on time, finish 2-3 projects. No experience necessary.
Tricks and Techniques in Silversmithing: (Ruthie Cohen) Continue on in your exploration of the jewelry medium. Tricks will be interspersed throughout! Some soldering experience necessary.
Woven Art for the Wall: Ribbed Basketry: (Carla Filippelli) This course explores the relationship of ribbed basketry and the vertical wall. Starting with traditional wall baskets and then venturing into more creative and sculptural shapes and styles into wall pieces or decorative centerpieces. One week will include a lesson in dying basket reed which will be utilized in your creations. We will fine tune the ribbed basket technique and take it to new heights into one of a kind wall art utilizing wild vines, natural and textural materials and the creative spirit. This course is suitable for beginners or intermediate basket makers who want to try more challenging ideas. Some hand strength necessary. Bring your reading glasses and any wild vines to play with.
Fundamentals of Leather Carving: (Karl Boyer) This class will introduce the tools and the processes used in the carving of leather. It will be assumed that all who attend have never tried this art form and will be taught accordingly. Students will have an introduction to leather, where it comes from, the tanning processes, and the types of products are made from leather. The basics of carving leather including preparation of the leather, making a pattern, and transferring the pattern to the leather surface will be a major component of the class. Students will be introduced to the swivel knife and other basic tools and decorative cuts will be explored. This class is designed to be informative, educational, and above all, FUN. Leather carving is an exciting hobby and a continual learning process.
Lapidary: (Wiley Gainus and Robert Orr) Students will learn how to cut and polish semi-precious stones as well as learning about the origin of the stones, the vocabulary of lapidary, and the basics of design.
Stained Glass: (Cheryl Stippich) Beginning students will learn cutting techniques, how to apply copper foil and basic soldering. They will complete an 8” hanging sun catcher. Returning students can improve their basic skills while working on the same project or one similar in size and complexity.
Introduction to Textiles Arts: (Christine Mariotti) Learn the basics of color, resists, fabric dyeing and painting.
Woodturning: (Jim Mellberg) Starting with rough logs or precut blanks, students will learn how to use a small lathe and the necessary tools to make a variety of turned projects. Suitable for both the beginning and continuing student.
Basic Woodworking for Beginners : (Richard McKee) Students will be instructed in safe use of basic woodworking hand and power tools. Projects will include a mitered jewelry box with raised panel top and splined corners and a three legged stool with turned legs.
Beginning & Intermediate Wheel: (Jim Cullen) This course is designed for the beginner as well as the intermediate who wants to learn new techniques or brush up on their throwing skills. The class will focus on throwing on the potter’s wheel. Basic shapes will be studied, pieces will be bisque fired and glazed. Glazed pieces will be fired and then critiqued by the class.
Clay for Adult & Child: (Nancy Heim) Where an adult and child will have the opportunity to enjoy working together with clay while exploring pottery. Students will experience pinch pot construction, coil built, slab construction and wheel work, as well as glazing and decorating techniques.
Fused Glass: (Karoline Shaffer) Work with various shapes and colors of glass, fusing them together to make patterns and designs. Then try slumping, a shaping technique used to give the fused glass piece shape and dimension. Projects may include soap dishes, candy dishes, small plates or wind chimes.
