Mardi-Gras Style Mask Making Workshop with Karl Boyer

Saturday, January 28th, from 9am to 5pm

Celebrate Mardi-Gras by making your own Mardi-Gras Mask. Tryon Arts and Crafts School is excited to have leather artist Karl Boyer lead this fabulous workshop.  Karl will be teaching students to make an embellished leather mask workshop on January 28, 2012. Karl is also teaching a Fundamentals of Leather Carving Class on Thursday evenings 6 – 9pm, Jan. 6 through February 9, 2012.

The one day Mardi-Gras Style Mask Making Workshop will start with an introduction to leather. Boyer will then discuss preparation of the leather, including making a pattern, and transferring the pattern to the leather surface, and an introduction to the tools of the trade. Students will make a leather half mask embellished with feathers, beads and other traditional and non-traditional elements. Students are asked to bring feathers, sequins, or other embellishments as desired.

The hours of the workshop are Saturday, January 28, 2012, from 9am to 5pm.

The workshop and the six week classes are designed for beginning to intermediate students. The classes will be held Thursday evenings 6pm to 9pm.  These sessions will teach the students basic skills while encouraging them to develop their own creative style.  In the six week classes, students will work on projects of their choosing under the guidance of the instructor.

Karl Boyer began doing leatherwork in 1970 when Tandy Leather Company was holding seminars with some of the pioneers of this art form.  He has belonged to several arts and crafts guilds including the Pennsylvania State Guild, the Kernersville, NC Guild, and the Winston-Salem Guild.  “While leatherwork is a craft, it is also an art form,” affirms Boyer.  “An art form that will teach self discipline.”

Advance registration for all classes and workshops is required. This is a supersaver workshop for members only. The price of the workshop is $40. A materials fee of $10+ will be due to the instructor at the time of the workshop. For more information about the instructor or workshop, please contact Tryon Arts & Crafts at (828) 859-8323 or by email tryonartsandcrafts@windstream.net.   We have a limited number of spaces available for this class so register soon!
